Building India’s AI Talent Ecosystem: The FutureSkills Pillar of the IndiaAI Mission

As India moves toward becoming a global AI powerhouse, developing a strong foundation of skilled professionals is essential. The FutureSkills pillar under the IndiaAI Mission stands at the heart of this effort. This initiative focuses on building India’s AI talent ecosystem and democratizing access to AI education across the country. The program takes a comprehensive approach, creating a robust pipeline of AI-skilled professionals through targeted interventions at multiple levels — from undergraduate programs all the way to doctoral studies.

1. Fellowships for UG, Dual Degree, PG, and PhD Students

To nurture deep expertise in artificial intelligence, IndiaAI has launched national fellowship programs for undergraduate, dual degree, postgraduate, and PhD students. These fellowships are designed to support high-potential talent pursuing advanced studies and research in AI and its real-world applications. The goal is to build a strong community of innovators, researchers, and thought leaders who will drive the next wave of AI breakthroughs.

2. Setting Up AI & Data Labs

To ensure that quality AI education reaches every corner of the country, IndiaAI is establishing 570 AI & Data Labs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. These labs — hosted at NIELIT Centres and in Government ITIs and Polytechnic Institutes — will give students and educators hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools, datasets, and problem-solving environments. Each lab is designed to function as a local innovation hub, fostering experimentation, collaboration, and practical learning within communities that have traditionally had limited access to such resources.

3. Courses for Skill Development

Another major focus of the FutureSkills pillar is industry-aligned, NCVET-recognized certification courses. Developed in collaboration with expert partners, these skill development programs help learners prepare for entry-level AI careers while emphasizing the ethical and responsible use of AI.
Looking ahead, IndiaAI plans to roll out modular and stackable learning pathways tailored to diverse learner profiles. These courses will cover a range of domains such as agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing, and education, ensuring that AI skills are accessible and relevant across sectors.

Through the FutureSkills pillar, the IndiaAI Mission is creating a foundation where AI education is inclusive, practical, and future-ready — empowering learners from every background to be part of India’s AI-driven growth story.

IndiaAI FutureSkills Fellowship – Eligibility and Benefits

The IndiaAI FutureSkills Fellowship aims to support students pursuing studies and research in Artificial Intelligence and related domains. The fellowship provides financial support, academic recognition, and opportunities to engage in AI-driven projects and innovation.

1. Undergraduate (UG) Fellowship

Eligibility

  • Must be in the final year of their Undergraduate course.
  • Should be undertaking projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) or other AI-related domains.

2. Integrated Dual Degree Fellowship

Eligibility

  • Must be in the final year of their Integrated Dual Degree program.

  • Should have a minimum CGPA of 8.0 or an overall percentage of 80% up to the last completed semester.

  • Must be undertaking projects related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) or other AI-related domains.

  • Open to students from all disciplines, including Engineering and Sciences, Medicine, Law, Commerce, Business, and Liberal Arts.

  • Students are eligible to apply after the 8th semester or once 4th-year results are declared.

  • Must have completed at least three full-time courses in AI.

  • Part-time students are not eligible to apply.

  • Only Indian Nationals may apply.

Benefits

  • Funding support of up to ₹1.0 lakh will be provided.

  • Students whose research paper is selected for an international AI conference (with an h5 rating above 100) are eligible for one-time funding support of up to ₹1.0 lakh towards travel and/or accommodation.

Required Documents

  • Endorsement letter from the Project Guide, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per format).

  • Endorsement letter from the Institute Head/HoD/Registrar, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per format).

  • A cancelled cheque or copy of the bank passbook cover page (account must be in the student’s name).

  • Original marksheets up to the last completed semester.

  • A passport-size photograph in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png format.

3. Postgraduate (PG) Fellowship

Eligibility

Benefits

  • Funding support of up to ₹2.0 lakh will be provided for the entire duration of the program.

  • Any student whose research paper is selected for an international conference in the field of AI (with an h5 rating above 100) will be eligible for a one-time funding support of up to ₹1.0 lakh towards travel and/or accommodation expenses.

Required Documents

  • Endorsement letter from the Project Guide, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per the prescribed format).

  • Endorsement letter from the Institute Head/HoD/Registrar, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per the prescribed format).

  • A cancelled cheque or cover page of the bank passbook (the account must be in the student’s name).

  • Original GATE scorecard (optional).

  • Original marksheets or CGPA proof up to the last completed semester.

  • A passport-size photograph in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png format.

4. PhD Fellowship

Eligibility

  • Must have a confirmed admission to a PhD program.

  • The research domain must be based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) or a related field.

  • Applications can be submitted only at the time of enrollment into the PhD program.

  • Must have achieved a minimum CGPA of 8.0 or 80% in the Undergraduate degree, or a minimum CGPA of 7.5 or 75% in the Postgraduate degree.

  • Only newly enrolled PhD students (first-year candidates) are eligible to apply.

  • Part-time students are not eligible for this fellowship.

  • Only Indian Nationals may apply.

Benefits

  • Monthly Fellowship Amounts:

    • ₹70,000 per month for the first two years.

    • ₹75,000 per month for the third year.

    • ₹80,000 per month for the fourth and fifth years.
      These are lump-sum monthly fellowships and include allowances such as HRA and other applicable benefits.

  • Annual Research Grant:

    • Each research scholar will be eligible for a research grant of ₹2 lakh per year to support research-related activities.

  • International Conference Support:

    • Any student whose research paper is selected for an international AI conference (with an h5 rating above 100) will be eligible for one-time funding support of up to ₹1.0 lakh toward travel and/or accommodation costs.

  • Endorsement letter from the Project Guide, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per the prescribed format).

  • Endorsement letter from the Institute Head/HoD/Registrar, signed and stamped on official letterhead (as per the prescribed format).

  • A cancelled cheque or cover page of the bank passbook (the bank account must be in the student’s name).

  • Original marksheets of all semesters from both Undergraduate and Postgraduate programs (consolidated).

  • A passport-size photograph in .jpg, .jpeg, or .png format.
